Program Overview<\/h4>\n

The overall goal of the Neuropathology Program is to provide a flexible, full-time educational program in both diagnostic and experimental neuropathology.\u00a0 The Program encompasses the varied aspects of modern neuropathology, with an emphasis on academic neuropathology.\u00a0 The training program is configured in a two-year format, but a three-year program is provided for trainees who especially desire additional training in advanced diagnostic and\/or research techniques.\u00a0 It is the intent and expectation of the program that all trainees will successfully pursue American Board of Pathology examination in Neuropathology.<\/p>\n

The Neuropathology Division is composed of two full-time neuropathologists, one full-time research investigator, one research instructor, and one neuropathology instructor. \u00a0The variety of pathologic entities seen at the University of Virginia are extensive and include the areas of neuro-oncology, pituitary pathology, neurodegenerative disorders, infections, metabolic, cerebrovascular, and immunological CNS diseases, and neuromuscular pathology. \u00a0This reflects the tertiary nature of the UVA Medical Center and the activity and quality of the Neurology and Neurosurgery services. \u00a0In addition, materials are examined from in-house and external consultations referred by the Neuro-Oncology Center. Strong emphasis is placed on the application of special histochemical stains, immunohistochemistry, and in-situ hybridization in the comprehensive evaluation of tumor specimens.<\/p>\n

Fellowship Requirements<\/h4>\n

Applicants must have an MD degree (or foreign equivalent with current ECFMG certification) and be board eligible or certified in anatomic pathology.<\/p>\n

Interested candidates should submit the Fellowship Application<\/a>, current CV, 3 letters of recommendation, personal statement, medical school transcript, and a copy of the USMLE transcript. Electronic submission is preferred. Applications will be accepted starting July 1st, twenty-four months prior to the start date, and positions will remain open until filled.
