{"id":571,"date":"2015-11-17T10:11:44","date_gmt":"2015-11-17T15:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pathology\/?page_id=571"},"modified":"2025-12-01T12:13:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T17:13:55","slug":"transfusion-medicine-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pathology\/educational-programs\/pathology-fellowship-programs\/transfusion-medicine-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Transfusion Medicine Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Program Overview<\/h4>\n<p>This ACGME accredited fellowship is intended for physicians who wish to acquire specialized experience and knowledge in each of the areas of blood banking and transfusion medicine.\u00a0 The Fellowship includes opportunities to participate in hematopoietic stem cell collection and processing, clinical coagulation, tissue typing, flow cytometry, apheresis, diagnostic molecular pathology, and informatics.\u00a0 There is an active clinical consultative service in transfusion medicine.\u00a0 The Fellow is involved in quality assessment and improvement activities, and in teaching physicians, students and staff.\u00a0 The Fellow has the opportunity to initiate research which could extend the fellowship beyond the traditional one-year period.\u00a0 The Fellow participates in developing policies and procedures, and leads the daily report attended by all the physicians, medical students and supervisors involved with the service.\u00a0 There is an opportunity to spend time at Virginia Blood Services, which supplies about 40,000 products annually to the University Hospital, where there are active solid organ and stem cell transplantation programs and a Level 1 trauma center.\u00a0 The Fellowship has a proven record of preparing participants for a career in transfusion medicine.<\/p>\n<h4>Fellowship Requirements<\/h4>\n<p>The candidate should have successfully completed a residency in pathology or a clinical discipline.\u00a0 The candidate must hold a license or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Foreign medical graduates must be ECFMG certified at the time of application.<\/p>\n<p><b>Number of positions:<\/b> 1<\/p>\n<h4>Applications<\/h4>\n<p>Interested candidates should submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pathology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/290\/2015\/11\/standardized-pathology-fellowship-application-no-Photo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fellowship Application<\/a>, current CV, 3 letters of recommendation, personal statement, medical school transcript, and a copy of the USMLE transcript. Electronic submission is preferred. Applications will be accepted starting July 1st, twenty-four months prior to the start date, and positions will remain open until filled.
