The PCEN has been successful in attracting and retaining talented undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty to research in Pediatric Nephrology.
Students
For the summer of 2026, the PCEN selected 2 students among 5 full applications received, all from Virginia 1) Jonathan Liu rising 3rd year Biology & Statistics, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, and 2) David W. Townsend, rising 4th year undergrad student, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA. Both students will train in Drs Gomez and Sequeira-Lopez labs in histology and immunohistochemistry techniques, microscopy and mouse genetics and physiology.
Jonathan Liu, rising 3rd year Biology & Statistics, UVA. Mentors: Maria Luisa S. Sequeira-Lopez and R. Ariel Gomez. Jonathan has been training as a student volunteer in Dr. Gomez and Sequeira-Lopez’s labs since the fall of 2024. He has been studying the mechanisms of vascular kidney hypertrophy under RAAS inhibition. With the guidance of the PCEN core, he developed a semi-automated image analysis pipeline integrating Fiji/ImageJ with Lab kit-based supervised pixel classification to quantify renin-positive areas within manually segmented kidney cortex regions across experimental conditions. He presented his research at the most recent PCEN Scientific Symposium and at several symposia at UVA.

Jason Smith, PhD. Research Scientist. in Dr. Gomez and Sequeira-Lopez labs. He is devoted to bioinformatic analysis of renin cell identity and nephrovascular development in health and disease data. In collaboration with the UVA PCEN Core, he developed a new software called BoldPy, an open-source Python tool built to fill a specific gap identified while pursuing BOLD-MRI as a non-invasive oxygenation readout in CAAH.

Manako Yamaguchi, MD, PhD, Postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Gomez and Sequeira-Lopez labs. Dr. Yamaguchi conducted spatial transcriptome analysis of mouse kidneys at different developmental stages to detect changes in renin cell distribution and RNA expression profiles during development. She also studied the innervation of the kidney vasculature under RAAS inhibition. Dr. Yamaguchi completed her postdoctoral training in March 2026, and she is continuing her clinical and research career at Niigata University in Japan.
