Mathieu Lab

Welcome to the Mathieu Lab

Irène P. Mathieu, M.D.
Assistant Professor, General Pediatrics
Assistant Director, Program in Health Humanities

The Mathieu Lab is devoted to improving the socio-emotional health of all children through community-engaged research on mental and behavioral health disparities and their solutions. We do this by centering the voices of youth as co-researchers and in partnership with individuals and organizations in Central Virginia, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations at UVA, including with the Equity Center, YouthNex, the School of Education and Human Development, and the Contemplative Sciences Center. The Mathieu Lab is also dedicated to inspiring and training the next generation of child health equity researchers through mentorship and participatory research approaches.

Compassionate Schools Project: The Mathieu Lab is part of an interdisciplinary research group working to implement and evaluate the Compassionate Schools Project (CSP) in Charlottesville. The CSP is an innovative curriculum that teaches mental wellness, physical fitness and mindful eating, and compassion for oneself and others. This group includes investigators and collaborators from UVA’s School of Education and Human Development, the UVA Contemplative Sciences Center, and Charlottesville City Schools.

Teen Wellness Team: We are creating a youth research advisory board consisting of Charlottesville-area high school students who want to learn about research and help design a qualitative study to better understand inequities in adolescent mental and behavioral health. Using a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) approach, the team will help to create a set of open-ended questions for qualitative data collection from relevant community members. Participants in the team will also receive a longitudinal curriculum on the research process and STEM careers.

Assessing mental and behavioral health disparities: The Mathieu Lab is using information from a UVA primary care pediatric clinic to better understand the burden of mental illness and related symptoms among children in Charlottesville. Specifically, we are interested in characterizing racial/ethnic, geographic, and socio-economic disparities in common diagnoses such as mood disorders, eating disorders, and behavior problems.
