The University of Virginia and the Department of Pediatrics offer several opportunities for 4th-year medical students to visit our institution and complete an away elective. We welcome your applications to one or both programs for the 2024-2025 academic year. Please see below for additional information.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to a limited number of competitive applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence, strong leadership, and a variety of extra-curricular experiences. Students should be strongly motivated to pursue a career in pediatrics. The program is open to applicants who are first-generation medical school attendees, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, individuals who have overcome substantial educational or economic obstacles, and students who come from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (Black/African‐American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, Alaskan Native, and LGBTQ+).

Requirements

  1. Must attend an LCME‐accredited medical school
  2. Be on track to complete all required clerkships at the home institution
  3. Completed VSLO application (should include letters of recommendation and medical school transcript, Curriculum Vitae, USMLE Step 1 score report, 2×2 photograph, and Step 2 score report if available)
  4. Personal statement on why you want to participate in this program and how it will help
    you achieve your overall career goals
