Clinical training is based on 1:1 interaction with faculty and a &#8220;hands-on&#8221; approach to learning. During the research training portion of the program, fellows receive training in either basic science or clinical investigation (or both). Trainees interested in clinical investigation may complete a 4th year of fellowship to complete a Master&#8217;s degree in the field of interest. Trainees working in basic science research may take coursework that complements their educational objectives and work closely with a primary mentor.<\/p>\n<p>All trainees have a Scholarship Oversight Committee consistent with the ACGME\/American Board of Pediatrics guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>During the first several weeks of the first year, fellows shadow the clinical team for orientation. In addition, during the first month of fellowship, fellows are oriented to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Newborn Emergency Transport System (NETS)<\/li>\n<li>ECMO<\/li>\n<li>Skills fair for common and uncommon procedures done by the fellow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CLINICAL MONTHS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supervise clinical care of NICU patients with attending guidance<\/li>\n<li>Assume an active role in the supervision and teaching of housestaff, medical students and nursing staff in the NICU<\/li>\n<li>Lead daily Intake Rounds each morning discussing new admissions and overnight events<\/li>\n<li>Perform or supervise clinical procedures and attend high-risk deliveries when special expertise is required<\/li>\n<li>Perform antenatal consultations<\/li>\n<li>Primary physician of ECMO cases performed in the NICU<\/li>\n<li>Organize and participate in neonatal and perinatal conferences<\/li>\n<li>Organize and dispatch the Newborn Emergency Transport Service team\u00a0and participate in particularly complex transports<\/li>\n<li>Rotations in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (required) and the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (elective) are available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>RESEARCH MONTHS<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Pursue self-selected research project(s) with active guidance and mentoring from Neonatology faculty and clinical and basic science faculty outside the Division of Neonatology<\/li>\n<li>Required 2-week courses in statistics, epidemiology, and electives related to clinical or bench research to receive a certificate in clinical research<\/li>\n<li>Present at regional and national scientific meetings and generate at least one peer-revied publication of the scholarly project by the end of fellowship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>NICU HIGH-RISK FOLLOW-UP CLINIC<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Evaluate medical and developmental progress of infants discharged from the intensive care nursery<\/li>\n<li>Seen in conjunction with Developmental Pediatricians and Pediatric Occupational &amp; Physical Therapists<\/li>\n<li>Fellows are scheduled for approximately 30 half-day clinics across the three years of fellowship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>CONFERENCE SCHEDULE<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Weekly<\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Division Meeting &#8211; Discussions of clinical issues and management of the NICU<\/li>\n<li>Perinatology Rounds &#8211; Discuss upcoming high-risk deliveries and management of current inpatients<\/li>\n<li>Neuro-NICU Rounds &#8211; Multidisciplinary discussion with Neurology, Neurosurgery, Therapists and NICU service of patients with neurological injuries. Also includes monthly Neuroradiology Conference.<\/li>\n<li>Interdisciplinary Rounds &#8211; Clinical service team discusses inpatients with therapists, case managers, and social work<\/li>\n<li>Neonatology Morning Report &#8211; Join Department of Pediatrics faculty in resident-led case conference<\/li>\n<li>Pediatric Grand Rounds (Sept &#8211; June)<\/li>\n<li>Meet the Baby Rounds &#8211; Senior faculty led discussion at the bedside of clinical issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Monthly<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Journal Club &#8211; Fellow-led review of recent or sentinel publications in the field of Neonatology<\/li>\n<li>Morbidity, Mortality &amp; Improvement &#8211; Fellow-led review of recent issues of care in the NICU often supported by Pediatric Pathologists<\/li>\n<li>Neonatal Physiology &#8211; Three-year curriculum of physiology and disease processes seen in the NICU\u00a0led by Neonatology and\/or Sub-specialty attendings<\/li>\n<li>Board Review &#8211; Attending-led discussion of Board-type questions<\/li>\n<li>Complex Care Conference &#8211; Multidisciplinary conference facilitated by Medical Center Ethics team to discuss complex and difficult cases<\/li>\n<li>Clinical Trials Group &#8211; Discussion of current and potential clinical trials within the NICU<\/li>\n<li>Fellows Forum &#8211; Faculty\/Professional development series for fellows in the Department of Pediatrics<\/li>\n<li>Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinical Case Conference (<em>quarterly<\/em>) &#8211; Multidisciplinary case conference with MFM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>NIGHT CALL<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Taken in-house and rotated among all the neonatology fellows<\/li>\n<li>Call schedule written by senior fellows<\/li>\n<li>Supervise residents and nurse practitioners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The University of Virginia School of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics have a long track record and commitment to training clinician investigators.
