Over the years this program has served an important role in teaching physicians in training the art of making \u201chouse calls\u201d, the importance of a thorough social history, but how often our complex familial, social, economic and cultural differences are the greatest determinants of health and healing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1680\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/Home-visit-residents-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"Home visit residents\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/Home-visit-residents-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/Home-visit-residents.jpg 856w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cHumanistic medicine takes account of these human dimensions of illness and healing: What the doctor knows \u2013 not just assumes \u2013 about the patient-as-person and his or her familial, social, economic, and cultural circumstances can make all the difference in how the patient\u2019s illness is approached and managed, and in whether or not the patient heals.<\/p>\n<p>How can we help young clinicians learn who the person is? When residents make home visits, they learn first-hand that these variances must be addressed if the understanding between doctor and patient, and the treatments they agree upon, are to have any possibility of success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Dr. Leigh Grossman, Program Founder<\/p>\n<p>The UVA Pediatric Home Visit Program continues today as an integral part of our residency training program and service to our patient community.
