Fellowship has been an immense period of growth as a clinician scientist. Attention to \u201chow\u201d \u2013 and perhaps more importantly \u2013 \u201cwhy\u201d we choose certain therapies for certain patients (often with similar disease processes) is a core educational focus in the intensive care unit. Our attendings cultivate a mindset of clinical curiosity that will carry us well beyond the University of Virginia.<\/p>\n
Pediatric Critical Care<\/em><\/p>\n UVA is the ideal setting for the development and growth of basic and physician scientists. A genuine environment of collaboration is fostered and encouraged across departmental and institutional boundaries, permitting new investigators to utilize the resources of the entire institution. I feel fortunate to have senior investigators show great interest in helping new investigators like me to advance my research interest and career.<\/p>\n Neonatology<\/em><\/p>\n The house-staff benefits program is superior. There are no co-pays for office visits within the system, and the Care Connection program allows for employees and their families to have primary care appointments scheduled within two business days and specialty care appointments within five business days.<\/p>\n Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics<\/em><\/p>\n I originally chose UVA because I could find no other fellowship program that offered such high-quality clinical training in such a wonderful place to live. You won’t find many academic medical centers in a place like Charlottesville. Here, you have the advantages and opportunities of living in a much larger city, without the hassles and downsides.
