Successful completion of the fellowship qualifies the trainee for the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics examination, which is required for certification by the <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abp.org\/\">American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our program selects approximately one fellow each year from a competitive pool of applicants, based upon availability of funding. \u00a0Prerequisites include three years of general pediatrics training, and U.S. citizenship or a J1 Visa. \u00a0Selection preference is given to candidates who intend to pursue an academic position after completing fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>The objective of the Fellowship Program in Developmental &amp; Behavioral Pediatrics is to train pediatricians with specialty knowledge and competence in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developmental pediatrics content outline as per the ABP\n<ul>\n<li>Foundations of developmental-behavioral pediatrics<\/li>\n<li>Biological mechanisms of development and behavior<\/li>\n<li>Family and societal factors<\/li>\n<li>Elements of assessment and management<\/li>\n<li>Adaptation to general health problems and their treatment<\/li>\n<li>Development-behavioral aspects of chronic conditions<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive\/adaptive disabilities<\/li>\n<li>Specific learning disorders<\/li>\n<li>Motor disabilities<\/li>\n<li>Autism spectrum disorder<\/li>\n<li>Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/li>\n<li>Externalizing and internalizing behaviors and conditions<\/li>\n<li>Substance use disorder<\/li>\n<li>Child abuse and neglect<\/li>\n<li>Somatic symptoms and related disorders<\/li>\n<li>Sleep problems and sleep-wake disorders<\/li>\n<li>Feeding and eating problems<\/li>\n<li>Elimination disorders<\/li>\n<li>Sexuality<\/li>\n<li>Law, policy and ethics<\/li>\n<li>Core knowledge in scholarly activities, including research and teaching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Competency-based medical education as per the ACGME\n<ul>\n<li>Patient care<\/li>\n<li>Medical knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Practice-based learning and improvement<\/li>\n<li>Interpersonal and communication skills<\/li>\n<li>Professionalism<\/li>\n<li>Systems-based practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/DevPeds12RESIZE2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-460 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/DevPeds12RESIZE2.png\" alt=\"DevPeds12RESIZE2\" width=\"738\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/DevPeds12RESIZE2.png 700w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pediatrics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/237\/2015\/11\/DevPeds12RESIZE2-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/a>UVA Children&#8217;s Hospital recognizes and supports the important role of child and adolescent development as it relates to general pediatrics.\u00a0 The Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) is a CARF-accredited outpatient clinical unit of the UVA Children\u2019s Hospital and includes the division of Developmental Pediatrics as well as Orthopedics, Urology, pediatric PM&amp;R and physical\/occupational\/speech therapy.\u00a0 The CDRC delivers outpatient evaluation and therapeutic services, as well as inpatient consultation services throughout the Children\u2019s Hospital.
