Volunteers\u00a0from the Legal Aid Justice Center\u00a0are available\u00a0to\u00a0help families with a variety of legal problems that affect their health and well-being.<\/p>\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"\">\n<h3>Who is eligible to receive legal assistance?<\/h3>\n<p>All\u00a0families whose children receive their health care at the University of Virginia.<\/p>\n<h3>When are legal aid staff available to help?<\/h3>\n<p>Ask your child&#8217;s doctor for a referral or contact Greg Nelsen,\u00a0Social Work, at 924-5851, to arrange for a referral.<\/p>\n<h3>What if I need help right away?<\/h3>\n<p>For an urgent problem that cannot wait, contact Greg Nelsen, Social Work, at 924-5851, to arrange for assistance.<\/p>\n<h3>What kinds of problems can the Child Health\u00a0Advocacy Program help with?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Benefits &#8211; Medicaid\/FAMIS, food stamps,\u00a0Medicare,\u00a0WIC,\u00a0unemployment\u00a0Benefits, TANF,Social Security\/Disability. It is especially important to get help if you are in the process of losing your benefits, or if you have recently lost these benefits, or if have had your benefits terminated.<\/li>\n<li>Housing &#8211; It is especially important to get help if you have major problems with the condition of your home (leaky roof, broken heat or plumbing, etc.) or are being evicted from your home.<\/li>\n<li>Employment &#8211; Wage claims,\u00a0job termination or discrimination,\u00a0unemployment insurance<\/li>\n<li>School &#8211; special education, 504 plans, children with special health care needs at school, school discipline\/suspension<\/li>\n<li>Family &#8211; domestic violence,\u00a0visitation, child support,\u00a0child removal, spousal support,\u00a0adoption<\/li>\n<li>Consumer issues &#8211;\u00a0 Assistance is available for families\u00a0preparing to make a major purchase (such as a car) to help ensure that sales practices and terms are as fair as possible for\u00a0our families.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Betty Sams Christian Child Health Advocacy Program (CHAP) at the University of Virginia is a medical-legal collaboration\u00a0between the University of Virginia Children&#8217;s Hospital, the University of Virginia School of Law, and the Legal Aid Justice Center that\u00a0provides legal assistance to families with children who receive their health care at the University of Virginia.
