What Do Near-Death Experiences Suggest About Life, Death, and Beyond?

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are profound experiences that frequently occur on the threshold of death. They include phenomena that are difficult if not impossible to reconcile with a materialistic view of the mind, such as enhanced thinking and perceptions while the brain is severely impaired, accurate perceptions from outside the physical body, and encounters with deceased persons not known to have died. Dr. Bruce Greyson has been studying NDEs for almost half a century. In this presentation, he shares some of his most important findings on the nature of life and death, illustrating his research data with captivating examples.

Dr. Greyson will discuss challenges in researching NDEs, establishing the reality of NDEs, the most common features of the experience, various models that have been proposed to explain NDEs, and the dramatic transformations that usually follow NDEs. Finally, he will discuss the implications of NDEs for our understanding of mind and brain, for our understanding of the possibility of post-mortem survival, and for our understanding of the relationship between biological and spiritual events and what that implies about what it means to be human.

Research shows that in at least one-fifth of near-death experiencers’ most memorable episodes of disclosing their NDE to a healthcare provider, family member, or friend, the experiencer came away feeling harmed.

The purpose of this one-day symposium is for anyone—professional or layperson—to complete the day feeling confident that they know how to fulfill their professional ethical and personal moral responsibility to do no harm to near-death and related experiencers. Join us to hear experiencers, healthcare providers, a bioethicist, and friends reveal their best and worst experiences of disclosure and offer their most important advice about how others can avoid harm and increase help to those touched by near-death and related experiences.

Jun 9 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Vail Symposium Zoom Webinar:

Crossing the Threshold: The Continuity of Consciousness From This Life To The Next

Bruce GreysonPresenting for the Vail Symposium, Dr. Greyson will discuss issues such as challenges in researching NDEs; establishing the reality of NDEs; the most common features of the experience, including enhanced thinking and perception, the life review and out-of-body experiences, highlighting features that are independent of cultural or religious beliefs; and various models that have been proposed to explain NDEs, including the relationship of NDEs to mental illness, to various alterations in brain biology, and to psychological factors.

As startling as some of these findings are, however, Dr. Greyson’s primary interest as a psychiatrist is in how NDEs dramatically transform experiencers. In this presentation, he will discuss changes in attitudes toward life and death, changes in spirituality, and changes in behavior – both positive and challenging aftereffects.
