George J. Stukenborg, Ph.D., M.A.

Dr. Stukenborg is a health services researcher with a focus in comparative effectiveness research and statistical methods for assessing patient outcomes, primarily using observational research designs that make use of administrative and registry data sets. His analytic expertise includes SAS and R applied to large data base analysis methods, and advanced multivariable and multivariate statistical modeling methods. He teaches PHS 7120 ‘Comparative Effectiveness and Health Outcomes Research’ each spring, and has over 70 peer reviewed publications. Dr. Stukenborg is Professor and Director of the Division of Patient Outcomes Research, and Co-director of the Surgical Outcomes Research Center.

  • Observational research design
  • Quantitative methods in population health

Research Interests:

  • Mortality risk adjustment methods
  • Administrative data base studies
  • Comorbid disease measurement

Teaching Responsibilities:

Dr. Stukenborg teaches the course PHS 7120, Comparative Effectiveness and Outcomes, which reviews how health services research is used to address key issues in health care and explains methods and related mathematical concepts. The course also provides training in SAS programming for database management and multivariable analysis, and training in the use of TreeAge PRO software for decision analysis modeling and cost-effectiveness analysis.
