Hong Zhu, Ph.D., is<\/span>\"\" a tenured Professor of Biostatistics and Health Data Science in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine. She currently serves as the Faculty Director of <\/span>Biostatistics and Population Science Shared Resource<\/a> (BPSSR) of the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center. Prior to joining UVA in November 2022, she was on faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center from 2013 to 2022 and at the Ohio State University College of Public Health from 2010 to 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zhu\u2019s methodological research interests include design and analysis of explanatory and pragmatic clinical trials, statistical methods for complex survival data (e.g., biased sampling, semi-competing risks), causal inference, and multimodal data integration with AI\/ML methods. Her work is inspired by and applied to biomedical and clinical studies. Dr. Zhu\u2019s collaborative research interests include basic, clinical, translational, and population sciences studies in areas including cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. Dr. Zhu has published multiple high-impact statistical methodology papers and co-authored a book entitled “Design and Analysis of Pragmatic Trials<\/a>” (Chapman & Hall\/CRC, 2023).<\/p>\n

Dr. Zhu’s research work has been supported by extramural funding. She is the PI of a PCORI Methodology Award to improve methods for design and analysis of comparative effectiveness research (CER) with complex observational healthcare data, and the PI of an NSF Award to develop a dynamic modeling framework and risk prediction tool with complex observational semi-competing risks data. She has served as the Biostatistics and Data Management Core Director of an NCI P01 Award on treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an NCI U54 SPORE Award and a P20 SPORE Planning Award on cancer health disparities in Pediatric Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and a co-investigator on numerous large federally funded grants.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zhu frequently serves as a standing member or ad hoc reviewer of NIH study sections and PCORI review panels. She is appointed to serve in the role of Statistician on the NCI Central Institutional Review Board (Adult CIRB \u2013 Late Phase Emphasis) and is a statistical member on the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center\u2019s Protocol Review Committee. She currently serves as Chair of the Cancer Center Biostatistics Directors (CCBD) Community Group of the American Statistical Association (ASA), as an Editorial Board Member for BMC Cancer, and previously served on the NCI Head and Neck Cancer Steering Committee Metastatic-Recurrent Task Force (2021-2025).<\/p>\n
