Women&#8217;s History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>As highlighted on the UVA Cancer Center Facebook Page:<\/h4>\n<p>Stefanie Redemann, PhD, investigates cellular division \u2013 the fundamental process<br \/>\nfor bodily growth, maintenance and function \u2013 to understand why it can go wrong,<br \/>\nresulting in cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Redemann uses an electron microscope that emits a focused beam of electrons<br \/>\nto create a detailed image of a specimen\u2019s structure and composition. She<br \/>\nexamines microtubules, which act like ropes used in a tug-of-war to pull DNA into<br \/>\nplace during cell division.<\/p>\n<p>UVA Cancer Center\u2019s ultimate goal is known as \u201ctranslational\u201d research:<br \/>\ninterdisciplinary study that translates into better cancer prevention, detection, and<br \/>\ntreatment. The foundation of translational research is known as basic science: how<br \/>\nhealthy bodies and cancer cells actually work. While \u201cbasic science\u201d may seem out<br \/>\nof place in advanced cancer research, we still have much to learn about the<br \/>\nfundamentals of living systems, including cell communication and disease<br \/>\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what Dr. Redemann studies. Her work is part of translational science<br \/>\nbecause it could impact many areas of discovery across fields.
