{"id":344,"date":"2015-10-02T10:57:29","date_gmt":"2015-10-02T14:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pmr\/?page_id=344"},"modified":"2025-05-30T12:49:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T16:49:27","slug":"pmr-residency-applications","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pmr\/pmr-residency-training-program\/pmr-residency-applications\/","title":{"rendered":"Residency Applications"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"wdcfontSize4\">Residency Application Requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The University of Virginia Health System is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program.\u00a0 All applicants for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency appointments must register with the NRMP to participate in the Match.\u00a0 Foreign Medical Graduates should register either via their school (if applicable) or via the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).\u00a0 All applications to our program must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The Program <strong>does not<\/strong> accept hard copy applications via regular mail or\u00a0fax nor electronic copies via email.\u00a0 <strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize3\"><em>The deadline for accepting applications is November 15th.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical Medicine &amp; Rehabilitation Residency\u00a0Program Positions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our department has two\u00a0tracks available to MD and DO candidates &#8211; the\u00a0<strong>(4-year)<\/strong> <strong>Categorical<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Program<\/strong> and the <strong>(3-year) Advanced Program.\u00a0<\/strong> It is possible to apply to either or both programs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Categorical (4-Year) Program:<\/strong> Includes completing your internship within our program. If you match through ERAS, you enter into a PGY1 position in June of that same year. You stay at UVA PM&amp;R for four years.<br \/>\nProgram Code: 1737340C0<br \/>\n(2 positions are available each match for this program.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Advanced (3-Year) Program:<\/strong> Does not include the PGY1 year. You complete your intern year prior to joining our PGY2 class. If you match through ERAS, you enter into our program the following year in July, after completing your preliminary year requirements in another program. You stay at UVA PM&amp;R for three years.<br \/>\nProgram Code: 1737340A0<br \/>\n(2 positions are available each match for this program.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applications to the program should include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completed Application Form (CAF)<\/li>\n<li>MSPE (Dean&#8217;s Letter) &#8211; as soon as available, usually on or about November 1st<\/li>\n<li>USMLE\u00a0or COMLEX\u00a0score\u00a0for Step I &#8211;\u00a0we look for strong board scores and a pass on the first attempt. M4&#8217;s should have sat or scheduled Step II, CS and CK, by the time of interview &#8211; with passing scores on first attempt required by the end of interview season<\/li>\n<li>Medical School Transcript<\/li>\n<li>Three Letters of Recommendation (LOR) &#8211; at least one letter should be from a Physiatrist<\/li>\n<li>Personal Statement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional Requirements for\u00a0International Medical Graduates:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>USMLE scores for Step I, II (CK)\u00a0&#8211; we look for strong\u00a0a strong pass on first attempt and a Pass on Step II (CS). These are required to be eligible for ECFMG certification<\/li>\n<li>TOEFL score of 275 or a first time pass on USMLE Step II, Clinical Skills as proof of language proficiency<\/li>\n<li>Graduation from medical school within the past five years<\/li>\n<li>Must have at least two clinical rotations in the United States\u00a0and a Letter of Recommendation\u00a0from each rotation<\/li>\n<li>ECFMG certification at the time of appointment<\/li>\n<li>Only the J1 Visa is supported<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"fontsize11\">Also, graduation from medical school within the past five years is not required, but is preferred.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interview Process:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each application is reviewed by the Residency Committee prior to extending an invitation to interview.\u00a0 A formal interview is required to be considered for the program.\u00a0 In order for your application to be reviewed we require, at minimum &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Completed Application Form (CAF)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>USMLE\u00a0Transcript<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Medical School Transcript<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Three letters of Recommendation (LOR)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Personal Statement<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>IMG&#8217;s, in addition to the above must be ECFMG certified at the time of appointment<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em><strong>The committee will not review incomplete applications.<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div>Upon review of complete applications the program will notify the applicant through ERAS of their decision.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Interviews\u00a0for\u00a0match season\u00a0are on the dates listed below.
