The PM&amp;R Residency Program has 14 positions total and is fully accredited by the ACGME.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\"><span class=\"wdcfontSize4\">PGY1<\/span>\u00a0 FIRST YEAR:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">The internship year is divided into six months of Internal Medicine, two months of Neurology, and one-month rotations in Emergency Medicine, outpatient and inpatient Orthopedics, PM&amp;R, and Urology. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents develop strong fundamental clinical skills during their first year of training, and work\u00a0with specialists who will serve as important referral sources for their rehabilitation practices in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div><em>Neurology\u00a0Consults<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><i>Neurology Inpatient<\/i><\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Orthopedic Spine<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Orthopedic Adult Reconstruction<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Emergency Department<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>General Medicine Inpatient<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Digestive Health Inpatient<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>General Medicine Clinic<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>General Medicine Consults<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>PM&amp;R<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Urology<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>PGY2\u00a0 SECOND YEAR:<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize3\">Building on the foundation of the internship year, the second year program exposes the resident to a variety of inpatient rehabilitation experiences. Specialized programs have been developed in stroke and brain injury, spinal cord injury, and orthopaedic rehabilitation. Residents participate in daily multidisciplinary inpatient rounds and are introduced to techniques of rehabilitation team management, therapy prescription writing, and functional goal setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\"><strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-350 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pmr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2015\/10\/PGY2Year.gif\" alt=\"PGY2Year\" width=\"73\" height=\"162\" \/>3 months General Rehabilitation Rotation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\"><strong>3 months Neurorehabilitation Rotation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">3 months Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Rotation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">3 months Orthopaedic\/Joint Rehabilitation Rotation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>PGY3\u00a0 THIRD YEAR:<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">Residents in their third year of training rotate through a variety of\u00a0predominantly outpatient programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-351 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pmr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2015\/10\/PGY3Year.gif\" alt=\"PGY3Year\" width=\"80\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\"><strong>3 months Adult Inpatient Consults\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">3 months PM&amp;R Outpatient Clinic<br \/>\n(includes Sports Medicine, Rheumatology,\u00a0and P&amp;O components)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">3 months Electrodiagnostic Medicine<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">1 month Pain Management\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">1 month Elective<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">1 month Outpatient Physiatry<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PM&amp;R Adult Inpatient Consults:<\/strong> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">This is a 3-month rotation in which residents\u00a0spend their time primarily at the UVA Medical Center evaluating inpatients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PM&amp;R Outpatient Clinic:<\/strong> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">This is a 3-month rotation in which residents spend 4 days per week in the musculoskeletal clinic, primarily evaluating and treating a variety of sports injuries and other acute and chronic musculoskeletal problems.\u00a0Residents learn a variety of procedures including compartment testing, joint injections and trigger point injections in addition to EMG. Additionally, residents provide medical coverage for multiple community sporting\u00a0events and two high school football teams.\u00a0One 1\/2 day per week is spent in Rheumatology Clinic and one 1\/2 day per week is spent in Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Electrodiagnostic Medicine:<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">This is a 3-month rotation in which residents are paired with a senior resident and learn to perform and interpret nerve conduction studies and electromyography.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0residents will perform EMG guided botulinum toxin chemodenervation\u00a0procedures.\u00a0Residents typically perform approximately 200 EMGs over three months. One half day per week is spent in Spinal Cord Injury\/Spasticity Management Clinic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PM&amp;R Residency Program Rotation in Pain Management:<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">This is a one-month rotation in the UVA Pain Clinic with the Department of Anesthesia.\u00a0Residents work with Fellows in Pain Management and Anesthesiology faculty in addition to Pain\u00a0Psychologists. Residents see a variety of chronic pain disorders and have an opportunity to assist in pain procedures in the fluoroscopy suite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outpatient Physiatry:<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> This is a one-month rotation during which residents spend time in various departmental outpatient clinics including Spinal Cord Injury, Concussion\/Brain injury, and Spasticity Management as well as an interdisciplinary ALS clinic.\u00a0 Additionally, residents complete an online training program in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"wdcfontsize4\">PGY4\u00a0<\/span> FOURTH YEAR:<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">The senior year enables the resident to further his or her clinical, teaching and research skills.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This includes Elective time which allows each resident to tailor his or her training to meet individual learning objectives and prepare for a future role in practice and\/or fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-352 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/pmr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/187\/2015\/10\/PGY4Year.gif\" alt=\"PGY4Year\" width=\"74\" height=\"176\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\"><strong>3 months Electrodiagnostics Lab Rotation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">1\u00a0month<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">Interventional Spine Rotation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">1 month Outpatient Orthopaedics<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">4\u00a0months Outpatient Clinical Electives<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">2 months Inpatient and Outpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation Rotations<\/span><\/strong><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span class=\"wdcfontSize2\">1 month Occupational Medicine Rotation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"fontsize11\"><strong>Electrodiagnostic Medicine Rotation<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0This is a 3-month rotation in which senior residents participate in the teaching of junior residents in the EMG lab. In addition to EMG\u00a0and nerve conduction studies,\u00a0residents perform a number of chemodenervation procedures (botulinum toxin injections) under EMG guidance. During the course of their residency, most UVA PM&amp;R residents perform and interpret 350 to 400 electrodiagnostic studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interventional Spine Rotations:<\/strong> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">This is a one month rotation in which residents work in an interdisciplinary spine center under the direct supervision of a fellowship trained interventional spine PM&amp;R physician.\u00a0 The resident gains experience with the diagnosis and management of spine pathology.\u00a0 Significant time is allotted for hands on training in fluoroscopically guided pain procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PM&amp;R Residency Program Rotation in Outpatient Orthopaedics Clinic:<\/strong> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">\u00a0 This is a one-month rotation in the orthopaedic clinic.\u00a0Residents rotate through various subspecialty clinics including joint replacement, orthopedic spine, hand, foot and ankle and trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PM&amp;R Outpatient Clinical Electives:<\/strong> <span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">Residents have\u00a0four months of elective outpatient rotations of their choosing with opportunities to participate in electives outside of our program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pediatric Rehabilitation: <\/strong>This is a two month outpatient rotation at the UVA Children&#8217;s Hospital. Residents spend time working in multidisciplinary and specialty clinics for children with rehabilitation needs. They\u00a0work with, and learn from,\u00a0a board-certified pediatric rehabilitation physician as well as rehabilitation experts from the Division of Developmental Pediatrics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PM&amp;R Residency Program Rotation in Occupational Medicine:<\/strong><span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">\u00a0This is a one-month rotation spent in the PMR outpatient\u00a0occupational medicine clinic where residents learn\u00a0techniques in\u00a0manual medicine, chemodenervation, impairment ratings,\u00a0and Independent Medical Evaluations\u00a0while treating general musculoskelal injuries and work related injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">PM&amp;R DIDACTICS<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><span class=\"wdcfontsize2\">Supplementing the clinical experience are diverse seminars and didactics. A core curriculum forms the basis for a series of lectures given weekly by faculty from the Department of PM&amp;R, as well as faculty from related specialties such as Neurosurgery, Neurology, Rheumatology, Pediatrics, Orthopaedics, Bioethics, Prosthetics and Orthotics. Physical and occupational therapists, speech\/language pathologists, neuropsychologists, rehabilitation nurse specialists, rehabilitation engineers and other members of the rehabilitation team contribute lectures and\u00a0demonstrations, and provide opportunities for hands-on experience.
