Our Department is a major source of innovation at the Emily Couric Cancer Center. We are leading many clinical programs aimed at improving the quality of care and quality of life of our patients. These programs include the use of new computer technology to enhance communication between our patients and the expert health care team. This team works together to enhance our patient’s wellbeing and reduce their side effects and symptoms. Advanced Technology at UVA

UVA is Virginia’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center.  The clinicians in the department of radiation oncology at UVA are national leaders in comprehensive cancer care.  As a social safety net hospital, we treat patients throughout Virginia and beyond, focusing on curing and palliating tumors while minimizing the duration of treatments.  We have multiple national and institutional clinical trials available for our patients, and we have advanced technologies and innovative techniques to treat cancers throughout the body.  Some of these advanced technologies include intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), brachytherapy, and MRI guided adaptive radiotherapy.  MRI guided radiation therapy, or MRIdian, combines the superior visualization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a linear accelerator into one innovative device that can deliver high-dose radiation with greater precision.  More information on these technologies can be found in the advanced technologies tab.
