Focused Ultrasound

About The Focused Ultrasound Center

Bringing a new frontier of scalpel-free surgery to the Central Virginia community.

The UVA Focused Ultrasound Center is dedicated to bringing Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) technology to its fullest potential. We work in a collaborative, interdepartmental manner to bring great technology together with great people.

The UVA Focused Ultrasound Center is the flagship focused ultrasound center in the United States. The Center is one-of-a-kind for its dedicated MRI scanner and is one of two centers worldwide with a body unit and both low and high frequency head units.

MRgFUS is FDA-approved for the treatment of uterine fibroids and bone metastases, and clinical trials are either underway or being considered for many other applications, including essential tremor, tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease, brain tumors, and the palliation of pain caused by sacroiliitis and osteoarthritis. Through clinical trials and research hosted at the Center, we will expand the knowledge of focused ultrasound and its role in non-invasive treatment options.

We are excited to bring this Center to UVa under the cross-departmental leadership of Dr. James Larner, MD (Dept of Radiation Oncology), Dr. Alan Matsumoto, MD (Dept. of Radiology), Dr. Jason Sheehan, MD, PhD (Dept. of Neurosurgery), and Dr. Richard J. Price (Ph.D., Research Director).
