[MUSIC PLAYING] I decided it was time to kind of come back home, and the University of Virginia had such a fantastic medical school. When I applied, I really didn't think I'd get in. But then when I did, I was like, this is great, an opportunity for me to not only explore Charlottesville but also be close to home. I think that one of the most unique things about having the set-up we have with the colleges and every student having their own dean is that you have someone who is your advocate for all of medical school and, frankly, beyond. We're at the forefront of clinical medicine, medical education, and just active learning, simulation centers, you name it. It seems like UVA has done a lot of the stuff correctly to put themselves at the forefront of a lot of these fields. Well, what you can get here is a place where you're going to thrive, and where people are going to support you, and where we prioritize community as the most important thing. I have gotten involved now with a lot of different diversity initiatives. And I think the School of Medicine does a great job with trying to make our environment very collegial and welcoming, and promoting diversity is a really important tenet of health care. Diversity is a focus of the medical school. And I think when you get into the concept of team-based learning, you really need that. While I've risen up as a second, third, and fourth year and I've seen the new classes come in, I've seen that diversity has persisted, and it's been really exciting. But it doesn't end there with just recruiting the medical students. Because when students come to interview, they also need to see the faculty, the residents and fellows that they will be working with. And over the last four years, we've made great strides in increasing diverse individuals in our resident pool and in our fellows and in our faculty, The University of Virginia provides a very unique aspect in that it's a very well known school. Big and small has a lot of great resources, but it has that intimate feel where, I think, you can really make an impact. You're not necessarily just a number. Our students go on to really competitive residencies, and people really excel when they come from UVA. UVA is really unique because not only is it really academically challenging, but it also fosters a lot of kindness and compassion. The people are some of the most welcoming and kind that you'll ever meet, and Charlottesville is an amazing place to learn how to become a doctor. The streets of Charlottesville are paved in magnets, and it sucks you right back. This is a kind of university that cares not only about our academics but also our growth as individuals, both in our professional and social lives. I've found the faculty to be extremely supportive, very welcoming. I've never felt that I can't approach my faculty members with any questions that I've had. We see our deans to plan out our careers. They're always there to help us. I want UVA to be the place where students want to be, where faculty want to be, where residents and fellows want to be. We are the ones that meet them the first day of medical school. We put their white coats on, and we hood them at graduation. So it's quite a journey the entire time, an adventure. [MUSIC PLAYING]
