One of the many advantages\u00a0of this approach is that rigorous and comprehensive in-silico imaging trials can be\u00a0conducted to optimize the system before patients are exposed to unnecessary radiation.\u00a0The essential components of this approach are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Clinically relevant task of interest<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">A model observer to perform the task, which incorporates system characteristics and data variability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Appropriate figure of merit to accurately measure observer performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">An ensemble of models to represent the realism of patient anatomy and abnormalities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is essential to characterize and model each of the components as\u00a0accurately as possible and incorporate variabilities found in each stage of the imaging\u00a0chain such that system optimization is performed rigorously for relevant tasks found in\u00a0clinical settings. Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), also called 3D mammography, has\u00a0become available in the US market only a few years ago. DBT is a limited-angle\u00a0tomography which inevitably has many different optimal settings. The task-based\u00a0approach is well suited for judiciously optimizing trade-offs between device performance\u00a0and patient safety\/comfort for such a system.
