 <\/p>\n

The University of Virginia\u00a0Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging will dedicate a medical imaging research center that will enhance UVA\u2019s world-class research program and assist in developing new imaging techniques to provide personalized care for many conditions, including brain injuries, cancer and heart disease.<\/p>\n

The center features advanced imaging equipment, including a leading-edge MRI scanner, a PET-CT scanner and a microPET\/SPECT\/CT scanner, plus a radiochemistry lab.<\/p>\n

The radiochemistry lab is developing radiopharmaceuticals, which are small radioactive agents that enable radiologists to create images of the body at the molecular level. This could lead to real-time diagnoses of a variety of diseases. An example is traumatic brain injuries such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) \u2013 a brain injury found in many football players \u2013 that now can only be identified after a patient\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
