Dr. Price’s project, titled “Multimodal Ultrasound for Precision Brain Tumor Drug Delivery and Monitoring,” builds off of the determination that tumors called gliomas may be even more receptive to targeted drug delivery than normal brain tissue. Creating tiny “microbubbles” that are activated by focused ultrasound sound waves may help open the brain’s natural protective barrier, known as the “blood-brain barrier,” so that drugs can enter exactly where needed. An accomplished researcher of ultrasound-targeted drug and gene delivery, Dr. Price currently serves as research director for UVA’s Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence.

The award is part of the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Accelerating Innovation Fund, which supports innovative biomedical research that may lead to tangible impact on the lives of cancer patients. The fund began in 2024 as a means to further foster collaborative projects at UVA.

Dr. Price isn’t the first department member to receive this grant. In 2024, Professor Jiang He, PhD, (principal investigator), along with Associate Professor Jiefu Zheng, MD, PhD, received funding for their project “Precision Alpha Particle Therapy for Ovarian Peritoneal Metastases.”
