Our clinical services include all aspects of Diagnostic Imaging and image-guided, minimally invasive Interventional and Diagnostic services.<\/p>\n<p>Our Department is a leader in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a><\/strong>, consistently ranking as one of the top funded Departments within the School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<h4>Faculty<\/h4>\n<p>Many of our faculty members are nationally and internationally acknowledged as experts in their subspecialty areas of practice, having made widely recognized contributions to clinical care, the education of trainees, and innovative imaging research. The Department currently consists of 54\u00a0full-time <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/about-us\/faculty\/\">Clinical Faculty<\/a><\/strong>, 14\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/about\/radiology-research-faculty\/\">Research Faculty<\/a><\/strong>, 40 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/residency-program\/diagnostic-radiology-residency\/current-residents\/\">Residents<\/a><\/strong> and 25 Fellows and Instructors in training. State-of-the-art imaging equipment is available in the main hospital, the Outpatient Cancer Center, and in the Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Centers at the Fontaine Research Park and the Northridge Transitional Care Facility.<\/p>\n<h4>Education Programs<\/h4>\n<p>Our faculty members frequently participate as invited speakers at numerous Scientific meetings and conferences and as visiting professors at academic institutions, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-0\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion squelch-taas-override\" data-active=\"\" data-disabled=\"false\" data-autoheight=\"false\" data-collapsible=\"true\"><h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-0\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-0\">Residencies<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-0\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-0\">\n<p>The UVA Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging offers two residency programs: \u00a0A four-year ACGME-accredited program in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/residency-program\/diagnostic-radiology-residency\/\"><strong>Diagnostic Radiology<\/strong><\/a>\u2014one of the most diverse disciplines in the field of medicine; and a six-year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/residency-program\/interventional-radiology-residency\/\"><strong>Interventional Radiology<\/strong><\/a> (integrated) program. Our residency programs are considered two of the best in the country and admission is highly competitive for the resident positions available each year. There are eight positions available in the diagnostic program; one position is reserved for those interested in a dedicated research training experience. Three positions are available for applicants who want to pursue a career in Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-1\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-1\">Fellowships<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-1\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-1\">\n<p>Fellowship training programs are offered in <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/diagnostic-and-interventional-neuroradiology\/\">Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/abdominal-imaging\/\">Abdominal Imaging<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/breast-imaging\/\">Breast Imaging<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/musculoskeletal-imaging\/\">Musculoskeletal Imaging<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/vascular-and-interventional-radiology\/\">Vascular and Interventional Radiology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/nuclear-radiology\/\">Nuclear Medicine<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/fellowship-program\/cardiothoracic-imaging\/\">Noninvasive Cardiovascular Imaging<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-2\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-2\">Medical Students<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-2\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-2\">\n<p>Our 4th year <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/services\/medical-student-elective\/\">Medical Student elective in Diagnostic Radiology<\/a>\u00a0is the most popular elective in our School of Medicine. Our Faculty and Residents are also an integral component of the core curriculum, systems-based education for the first and second year Medical School students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<h4>Research<\/h4>\n<p>Our Department is a leader in <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/\">Research<\/a>, consistently ranking as one of the top funded Departments within the School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-1\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion squelch-taas-override\" data-active=\"\" data-disabled=\"false\" data-autoheight=\"false\" data-collapsible=\"true\"><h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-3\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-3\">Radiology Research<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-3\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-3\">\n<p>Our research efforts revolve around magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequence development, complex image processing, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/traumatic-brain-injury\/\">traumatic brain injury<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/hyperpolarized-gas-mr-imaging\/\">hyperpolarized gas imaging<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/mr-guided-focused-ultrasound-surgery-mr-gfus\/\"> focused ultrasound development and clinical applications<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/noninvasive-cardiovascular-imaging\/\">metabolic imaging of cardiac and peripheral vascular disease<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/vascular-research\/\">genetics of vascular restenosis and atherosclerosis<\/a>, breast disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/neuroimaging\/\">functional brain and stroke imaging<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology-research\/research\/imaging-instrumentation-development\/\">device and technology development<\/a>. Our Department has four MR scanners dedicated to research, with dedicated human and animal focused ultrasound units, an onsite cyclotron, and other highly specialized imaging technology (microPET, SPECT CT, MR ClinScan, IVIS bioluminescent scanner, and hyperpolarizer) for animal imaging research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-4\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-4\">Interdepartmental Research<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-4\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-4\">\n<p>Our basic science research encompasses a wide array of projects performed in conjunction with our <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/cardiovascular-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiovascular Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/neuroscience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neurosciences<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bme.virginia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biomedical Engineering<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.virginia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engineering<\/a> colleagues.
