Candidates must have an MD or equivalent and successfully completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at an ACGME accredited institution.<\/p>\n<p>Our post-graduate fellowship program focuses on all aspects of breast imaging, including clinical consultation, screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, galactography, and image-guided interventional procedures; core biopsies are performed under ultrasound, stereotactic, and MRI guidance. In addition to gaining further expertise in this subspecialty, fellows will serve as junior faculty, playing a significant role in resident education.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fellows participate in conducting leading-edge breast imaging research. The division recently received a $5.5 million grant from the Department of Defense to develop an innovative new breast cancer screening model. The fellowship aims to provide teaching and research opportunities for fellows, adjusted to special interests and talents.<\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of the fellowship, the graduate will have the foundation to build an academic career in radiology, advance subspecialty knowledge and skills as an advanced clinical fellow or instructor, or enter community practice as an expert in breast imaging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-3\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-3\">Educational Objectives<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-3\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-3\">\n<p><strong>As a result of our clinical training and didactic conferences, we expect each Breast Imaging Fellow who finishes training to be able to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be conversant in the BI-RADS lexicon, including the mammography, ultrasound, and MRI sections<\/li>\n<li>Perceive breast masses, calcifications, and other abnormalities on mammography and determine probability of malignancy; develop an accurate differential diagnosis based on the imaging findings<\/li>\n<li>Determine appropriate management of mammographic, sonographic, and MR breast abnormalities<\/li>\n<li>For both standard and problem-solving mammography, describe the technique for obtaining the images, the correct terminology, and the appropriate applications<\/li>\n<li>Perform breast clinical examinations and correlate with problem-solving mammography<\/li>\n<li>Perform and interpret breast ultrasound examinations<\/li>\n<li>Interpret breast magnetic resonance imaging studies; recognize common MR artifacts that affect breast imaging<\/li>\n<li>Perform and understand the indications and complications of breast interventional procedures including: needle localization using mammographic, stereotactic, ultrasonographic, or MRI guidance; cyst aspiration; fine needle and core needle biopsy with stereotactic, ultrasonographic, or MRI guidance; galactography<\/li>\n<li>Understand the psychosocial concerns of patients undergoing breast imaging and learn how to deal with these issues; be able to talk with patients who\u2019ve been diagnosed with cancer in an appropriate, supportive manner<\/li>\n<li>Become familiar with breast pathology and the clinical significance of various benign and malignant lesions<\/li>\n<li>Understand risk factors for breast cancer, including genetics, and implications for screening mammography, ultrasound, and MRI; be familiar with common methods for measuring breast cancer risk<\/li>\n<li>Become familiar with community education programs regarding breast cancer awareness<\/li>\n<li>Determine the elements of quality control and quality assurance programs in Breast Imaging, including the criteria necessary for high quality mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI and the technical problems that impact image quality<\/li>\n<li>Become familiar with breast imaging literature and current research<\/li>\n<li>Interpret bone density examinations; understand the basic concepts of etiology, prevention, and treatment of osteoporosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-4\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-4\">Training Program<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-4\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-4\">\n<p>The University of Virginia is a large tertiary care center in central Virginia.\u00a0We provide screening and diagnostic mammography, as well as the full range of breast procedures. Mammography is performed at three sites, one of which is staffed by radiologists.<\/p>\n<h4>UVA Breast Care Center<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Main site of operations<\/li>\n<li>All digital operation<\/li>\n<li>Four mammography units, including two GE Senographe Digital units and two Hologic digital units<\/li>\n<li>Hologic Tomosynthesis<\/li>\n<li>Three dedicated breast US units: Two Philips IU 22 ultrasound units, one SuperSonic unit<\/li>\n<li>Upright GE stereotactic biopsy unit<\/li>\n<li>Breast specific gamma imaging (BSGI): Dilon camera<\/li>\n<li>Clinic space for surgical consultation, high-risk clinic, indigent care, benign breast disease clinic, and lymphedema clinic (4 exam rooms and 2 consultation rooms)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Emily Couric Cancer Center<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Newly completed comprehensive cancer center<\/li>\n<li>Adjacent to the main hospital<\/li>\n<li>Weekly Tumor Board meetings occur at this location<\/li>\n<li>No breast imaging occurs at this site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Northridge Mammography<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Adjacent to Women&#8217;s Center for Midlife Health<\/li>\n<li>Two mammography units, including\u00a0 GE Senographe Digital and a Hologic digital units<\/li>\n<li>DEXA<\/li>\n<li>Images are transported and read at the UVA Breast Care Center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Other Imaging Sites<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Main Hospital: Breast MRI- Seimens 3T. MRI guided biopsy is performed at this site<\/li>\n<li>Fontaine Imaging Center: Seimens 1.5T Avanto and Espree MRI units. Screening and diagnostic breast MRI<\/li>\n<li>Northridge Imaging Center: Seimens 1.5T Espree MRI. Screening and diagnostic breast MRI<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic Radiology Center in Orange, Virginia, located about 40 minutes from Charlottesville (not staffed by radiologists); GE digital mammography unit<\/li>\n<li>Outside contracts for mammography reading, including Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women; films sent to Breast Center for interpretation<\/li>\n<li>Mobile mammography van; GE digital mammography unit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-5\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-5\">Research and Academic Activities<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-5\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-5\">\n<p>The\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/divisions-2\/breast-imaging\/\">Division of Breast Imaging<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0has a strong research program. Our interests are diverse, ranging from clinical to basic science studies. Our research interests include breast density, breast cancer risk assessment, and education. Our division works with several Ph.D. radiology faculty who are currently studying scintimammography (designing new image receptors, including tomosynthesis for gamma imaging). The division recently received a $5.5 million grant from the Department of Defense to develop an innovative new breast cancer screening model (adding \u201cbreast density\u201d to the risk factor calculation). Our previous fellows have enjoyed participating in one or more projects and have presented their work at various conferences and professional gatherings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-6\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-6\">Fellowship Organization<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-6\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-6\">\n<h4>Call<\/h4>\n<p>Fellows are responsible for taking patient calls regarding any difficulties or complications after\u00a0 percutaneous biopsy. They are also available to protocol breast MRIs that are scheduled in the evening or on weekends. There is currently no ER or body call.<\/p>\n<h4>Teaching<\/h4>\n<p>Fellows will be expected to assist in teaching of medical students and residents rotating in on the Breast Imaging Service.<\/p>\n<h4>Evaluation<\/h4>\n<p>Fellows are provided with written evaluation of their performance four times during the program. The faculty performs evaluations of the fellows&#8217; performance at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Anonymous evaluations by the fellows of the program and are received twice per year and faculty evaluations are completed quarterly. Faculty are evaluated using a numerical scoring system on a wide variety of clinical, teaching, and research skills through New Innovations.<\/p>\n<h4>Resources<\/h4>\n<p>The fellows&#8217; office maintains desktop computers with internet and hospital systems access. The fellows may utilize any other department resources including the section&#8217;s administrative assistant, graphic artists, webmasters, and IRB support personnel to name a few.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"squelch-taas-header-7\"><a href=\"#squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-7\">Additional Info<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-7\" class=\"squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content squelch-taas-accordion-shortcode-content-7\">\n<h4>Salary, Benefits, and Academic Stipend<\/h4>\n<p>Our fellows receive an annual salary that is competitive with compensation offered by other institutions. They receive medical and dental care benefits for themselves and their immediate family. Additionally, malpractice insurance is provided at no charge. Fellows receive an annual stipend to cover expenses related to attending meetings or buying books.
