Shirley Naylor<\/p><\/div>\n

It is with great sadness that the University of Virginia’s Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging announces the death of Shirley Naylor, who worked at the department for 36 of her 51 years at UVA. She passed away the morning of Monday, July 3rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Shirley Ann (Morris) Naylor was born on November 3, 1947. A graduate of Albemarle High School, Shirley began working for UVA in the Department of Medical Records in 1967. During this time, Shirley transcribed medical documentation, later training and managing other transcriptionists as well.<\/p>\n

In 1982, Shirley began working for the Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging. She worked in a variety of capacities, such as providing administrative support to physicians as a part of a secretarial pool, supervising other administrative assistants, and overseeing the departmental library. Shirley also served as the department’s residency coordinator and worked closely with the residency director to recruit and grow our next generation of physicians.<\/p>\n

In\u00a02002, Shirley decided it was time to retire after 35 years of service to UVA. But retirement did not last long, and Shirley returned to work later that year as a part-time temporary status employee. For more than a decade, Shirley worked as an administrative assistant in the Body Division. Working closely with the division chief and faculty, Shirley prepared clinical work schedules, scheduled meetings, transcribed meeting minutes, and much more.<\/p>\n

Shirley Naylor worked for the Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging for 36 years before retiring in 2018.<\/p><\/div>\n

In 2013, Shirley chose to retire a second time, but once again returned on a part-time basis in the department’s administrative division. The department was struggling from limited storage space, and Shirley helped to create the department\u2019s scanning operations to digitalize old papers. During her time, she scanned thousands of documents going back more than 50 years, preserving the department’s records and resources in the process. Shirley retired for good in 2018.<\/p>\n

Shirley was caring, thoughtful, kind, supportive, hardworking\u2014and overall a wonderful person to work with on a daily basis. Her obituary<\/a> says that “Shirley was a very generous person and was the rock for her mother and her sisters.\u201d Not only was Shirley a rock to her mother and sisters, but also to all of us in the department who counted on Shirley for so many years. She never let us down and she will be greatly missed.<\/p>\n
