The UVA Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging hosted its first-ever Education Retreat on Friday, April 12. During the full-day event, faculty, trainees, and staff gathered in Newcomb Hall to discuss the education mission of the department.<\/p>\n
The event gave members of the Radiology Department the opportunity to take a step back and assess their academic mission. The Radiology Education team, led by Vice Chair of Education and Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Juliana Bueno, MD<\/strong>, created an interactive agenda that allowed participants to take part in meaningful conversations for evaluating and shaping the future course of their educational programs.<\/p>\n The retreat was facilitated by Andrew Wicks, PhD<\/strong>, Ruffin Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of Business. Dr. Wick also delivered the keynote lecture, which was titled \u201cRethinking the Divide Between Medicine and Business: A Stakeholder Approach.\u201d He spoke about how businesses, particularly those in healthcare, can balance their priorities by focusing not on profit-seeking \u201cshareholders,\u201d but on different types of \u201cstakeholders\u201d \u2013\u00a0 the employees, community members, and others who are directly impacted by their work.<\/p>\n Identifying key stakeholders within the department and in the broader institution served as a key theme during the conversations about implementing necessary change in the future. In small and large groups, participants reflected on the educational value and purpose of their department; set goals to improve departmental educational initiatives; reassessed and renewed their commitment to the educational mission as an academic department; and used current program strengths to create a vision for the future of the Radiology education.<\/p>\n Recently appointed Department Chair Colin Derdeyn, MD<\/strong>, was an active participant in the day\u2019s programming. He commended the department\u2019s dedication around this important undertaking.<\/p>\n \u201cThe degree of engagement and commitment of our faculty, trainees, and staff to our educational mission is deep and impressive,\u201d said Dr. Colin Derdeyn. \u201dThis was apparent from how many people chose to attend, the support of those who could not attend, and the active and positive participation of everyone there. The desire from all present to provide the best possible educational experience for our residents was really clear.\u201d<\/p>\n \n
