{"id":5021,"date":"2017-06-30T09:47:32","date_gmt":"2017-06-30T13:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/?p=5021"},"modified":"2026-05-06T15:13:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T19:13:29","slug":"nathan-finch-receives-mulholland-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/2017\/06\/30\/nathan-finch-receives-mulholland-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Nathan Finch Receives Mulholland Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Nathan Finch Receives Mulholland Award<\/h2>\n<p><em>On June 14th, 2017, Neuroradiology Fellow Nathan Finch was blown away when he received the Mulholland Award for Teaching Excellence in Foundations of Medicine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>Each year, first and second year medical students vote on a pool of nominees to \u201chonor them for their teaching excellence in the basic medical sciences,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.med.virginia.edu\/mulholland\/awards\/\">official website<\/a> states. This has been a long-standing tradition spanning 100 years. There are 10 award recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Susan Kirk, Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for GME programs, presented the award at a Neuroradiology division meeting. Nathan\u2019s face was priceless when she announced his name. \u201cThat\u2019s maybe the most surprised I\u2019ve ever seen someone,\u201d said Dr. Kirk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-award.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5023\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-award-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"Nathan Finch Receives Mulholland Award\" width=\"627\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-award-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-award-768x475.jpg 768w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-award-1024x634.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-award.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nathan concurred. \u201cI was shocked; it was very much unexpected,\u201d he said. \u201cI was not aware that the medical students evaluated us or nominated for awards, and I had been hurrying around before lunch trying to organize a biopsy before being dragged into what I estimated would be another standard fare division meeting. Then someone pulls out a plaque and starts saying all these wonderful complimentary things and I was thinking, &#8216;Wow, this person sounds amazing. Who is it? Spill the beans already.&#8217; Hearing that someone had said such things about me was heartwarming and surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-getting-award.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5024\" src=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-getting-award-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"Nathan Finch Receives Mulholland Award\" width=\"619\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-getting-award-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-getting-award-768x589.jpg 768w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-getting-award-1024x786.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/med.virginia.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/191\/2017\/06\/Nathan-finch-getting-award.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several anonymous comments accompanied the award: \u201cAt Nathan\u2019s work station there\u2019s always an extra chair for students, there\u2019s always a pile of printed articles for reading that night, and there\u2019s always a greatest case yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another stated: \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to parse out time given the extremely busy clinical service. He took it upon himself to change the way we teach at the radiology workstation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sugoto Mukherjee, Director of the Neuroradiology Division, said, \u201cOne of the things I realized is that Nathan does certain things the rest of us never do.
