Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS)

  • Students must complete the clerkship curriculum before attempting Step 2CS
  • Students must be enrolled or on an approved LOA to attempt Step 2CS

After successful completion of the core clerkships, the student must take both parts of Step 2 of the USMLE (2 CK and 2 CS).

Students in a dual degree program must take USMLE Step 2 CK and 2CS prior to entering the other portion of the program and must pass both in order to continue in the graduate program.

Both Step 2 tests must be attempted before November 1 of the year prior to graduation.

Please note:  Step 2 CS testing slots fill up very quickly.  Even if you intend to take the exam closer to the November deadline it is important that you sign up early.  We recommend that you schedule your CS appointment by April 15, in order to ensure that you get the site and the date that is best for you.

Testing Accomodations

If you are applying for accommodations, please plan to apply very early for USMLE, review of accommodations can take 10 weeks or more.

Step 2CS Failures

Passing  Step 2 CS is required for graduation. Students are allowed a total of three attempts to pass each of the two Step 2 examinations; failure to pass either Step 2 examination for a third time will result in dismissal from medical school, without recourse to the appeals process.

Students must pass all required clerkships and take USMLE Step 2 CS and 2 CK no later than November 1 of their last academic year in medical school to ensure an opportunity for remediation prior to residency match and graduation, should a failure occur.

Step 2 CS test results can take up 2 3 months to receive.  Please plan ahead to ensure a first time failure does not affect you ability to graduate on time
