My name is Ulysis Baal, and I’m honored to be part of the integrated cardiothoracic surgery program at UVA. I was born in Bicol, Philippines, and grew up in Bakersfield, California. I studied at UCLA and attended medical school at Wake Forest, initially open-minded about my specialty. During my third year, working with the pediatric heart surgery team at Carolinas Medical Center helped shape both my clinical interests and the kind of physician I hope to become.
I’m passionate about community work focused on food insecurity and public health, and I’m especially interested in expanding access to surgical care in resource-limited settings. I’m deeply grateful to the my family, mentors, and friends who’ve supported me along the way. With UVA’s collaborative culture and long-standing tradition of excellence in surgery, I have no doubt this is the right place to grow to become an excellent physician for the patients I’ll have the honor of serving.
