Ben Usry, MD
Hey everyone! I am a native South Carolinian who completed an undergraduate degree at Clemson University (go Tigers) and my medical education at the Medical University of South Carolina. I came to UVA for general surgery after doing an away rotation in my fourth year of medical school, and I immediately recognized the collaborative and respectful nature of the program. There is a commitment to academic and clinical excellence, and everyone here pushes each other to be better physicians, scientists, and people. It was during this away rotation that I also saw just how immersed Dr. Friel and the department were in the lives of the residents. He truly cares and wants them to be successful.
Cardiothoracic surgery and surgical oncology are areas of interest to me, but I am also open to exploring other opportunities at the moment. I am interested in an academic career and hope to continue to be involved in teaching and research.
Outside of the hospital, I love to do anything and everything outside. I love to mountain bike, run, golf, play tennis, volleyball, or hike. My fiancé and I also love to explore new restaurants and try different foods together. Shout out to her! I wouldn’t be here without her, and I can’t thank her enough! I am excited to be here at UVA and learn how to be a surgeon-scientist!
