Patrick Seelheim was born in Wuppertal, Germany. He studied Chemistry with focus on physical chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Münster, Germany and the University of California, Santa Barbara, CA.  In 2013, he earned his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Münster where he investigated the human ABC transporter MRP3. After a joint university-industry project on biochip-based translocation assays, he came to the University of Virginia in 2014 to work on bacterial outer-membrane proteins.
