The primary focus of the Generalist Scholars Program (GSP) is the development of student leaders who intend to pursue a career in a field of generalist medicine through the practice of Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, or General Pediatrics. The program provides an enriched curriculum with unique educational and clinical opportunities to include a three-week introductory course to general medicine and a two-week elective entitled Motivating Behavior Change. Students are paired with a faculty mentor throughout their medical education at UVA, and strong relationships are formed with their peers and the faculty, fostering a spirit of collegiality amongst the GSP community. The culmination of their four years in the GSP is the presentation of their scholarship project in a selected area related to primary care medicine. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the program and matching into an approved primary care residency, the GSP students receive a financial scholarship.
