Joint Clerkship Meeting Minutes

September 26, 2018

Welcome. Dr. Maryellen Gusic introduced herself and welcomed Directors and Coordinators who were available to attend.

The New FCM & EPA#3 Update – Andrew Parsons, MD. Dr. Andrew Parsons presented an overview of the new Foundations of Clinical Medicine Course. He outlined curriculum content, the roles of the Coaches, and the structure being used for the weekly sessions.  He highlighted the focus on helping students develop clinical reasoning and provided some foundational concepts and the framework being used to teach this skill. He also talked about how EPA assessments were being integrated in the pre-clerkship curriculum and introduced how the SOAP-V framework was being applied to assess EPA 3 in the Medicine clerkship.  Assessment of this EPA will be expanded to include other clerkships in the next clerkship year.

Affiliate Site Updates. Each affiliate site director offered an update on their institution and shared any challenges and new innovations implemented since the previous meeting.

Mulholland Report – Ory Streeter, MS4. Ory Streeter, SMD19 SMEC Representative, presented an executive summary of the Mulholland Report which included information on third-year clerkships, the Transitions Course and fourth-year review. He also included a summary of the special subject component of the report on EPA assessments and IPE projects.

Oasis Evaluation Update – Elizabeth Bradley, PhD. Dr. Elizabeth Bradley gave an update on the pilot project using the new clinical evaluation form.  She thanked those faculty members who have participated in the pilot and described the current work to analyze the data from the pilot.  She gathered input and feedback from the attendees.

Revise Clerkship Requirement Checklists – Maryellen Gusic, MD. Dr. Maryellen Gusic provided all of the directors and coordinators with data from the last clerkship year about students’ completion of required clinical conditions and procedures.  She asked all clerkships to review their required clinical conditions and clinical skills checklists using this data to confirm/add items, identify the settings and level of responsibility and the accepted alternate learning activity, if appropriate, for each item.  This review will be used to create the final checklists for use in the upcoming clerkship year.

Best Practices on Writing Effective Learning Objectives – Vera Chen, PhD. Dr. Chen discussed the purpose of learning objectives as a foundation for curricular planning and presented best practices for composing effective learning objectives.  Attendees engaged in exercises to practice skills in writing learning objectives.

 The meeting was adjourned at 315 PM.
