00:00 sitting next to me is my son dr. noha 00:03 Shankman he is a urologist at the 00:07 University of Virginia we have always 00:12 encouraged Noah since he's a little boy 00:16 to become a physician the joke in the 00:20 family is we put a tape under his pillow 00:23 that said I want to be a doctor I want 00:27 to be a doctor 00:33 as my mother said I'm dr. Noah Shenkman 00:36 and I'm here at the University of 00:37 Virginia where I have a dream job I get 00:40 to teach academic medicine to 00:42 undergraduate and graduate medical 00:44 trainees and I also get to practice 00:46 medicine in a high-tech state-of-the-art 00:49 environment wasn't always this easy I 00:58 grew up in New Jersey and to a 01:00 middle-class family in a suburb and we 01:03 didn't have enough money to pay for 01:04 college so like many other people my age 01:08 I chose to go into the army to pay for 01:11 college I was in the military for 21 01:15 years 01:16 I saw service overseas as well as it 01:18 won't to Reed Army Medical Center 01:19 they're always very grateful to be able 01:21 to take care of our nation's wounded 01:23 that face my life ended and my career 01:27 picked up again here at UVA I'm very 01:31 grateful at the University of Virginia 01:33 that I have the opportunity to work with 01:34 the da Vinci surgical robot and I do 01:37 most of my procedures using the robot 01:40 The Da Vinci Surgery is very cool even 01:45 after 10 years working with it 01:47 is still amazing to me the precise and 01:51 technical procedures we can perform 01:52 using the robot that before the robot 01:56 would have taken very large incisions 01:58 and prolonged hospital stays what are 02:04 the advantages of da Vinci surgery well 02:07 for the patient it means much smaller 02:09 incisions less pain and shorter hospital 02:12 stays with a quicker return to their 02:15 regular jobs 02:23 the scientific advantages of The Da 02:25 Vinci including using three-dimensional 02:28 vision which gives us much more accuracy 02:31 and precision in our surgery the wristed 02:33 instruments that The Da Vinci robot uses 02:36 are very precise and allow us to do much 02:42 more accurate surgery than was 02:44 previously performed using just 02:46 conventional laparoscopy 02:55 overall I think that the future of 02:59 surgery is going to be more and more 03:01 robotics and the robot will become more 03:05 and more part of every operating room
