UVA CLEAR: Center for Leading Edge Addiction Research
The University of Virginia’s Center for Leading Edge Addiction Research or CLEAR clinic is the site of ongoing research studies on substance abuse for the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences’ Division of Neurobiological Studies.
Through our research and programs, we hope to bring new knowledge to better understand the biological underpinning of addiction. Our approach combines medications and therapies, which target different brain pathways known to be involved in the rewarding effects of drugs, with behavior-changing techniques in an effort to reduce craving associated with substance abuse.

Alcohol Use Disorder Research
For individuals who regularly use alcohol, we are seeking adults ages 21 and older to participate in a research study. The purpose is to evaluate a study medication to determine if it can help individuals reduce or stop their craving for or usage of alcohol.
Substance Use Helpline
UVA CLEAR provides a helpline to residents of Virginia which offers support and education to individuals who are struggling with any substance use disorder. Referrals can be provided to treatment, counseling, or other resources in your area. Family or friends are also welcome to call for guidance.
