Medical students volunteering at a Charlottesville community garden

At the UVA School of Medicine, our commitment to health extends well beyond the clinic, classroom, and lab. Through outreach, education, and public service, we partner with people across Charlottesville and the Commonwealth to build healthier communities and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and scientists.

Our community programs meet people where they are. The Office of Medical Sciences Outreach opens doors to health careers through hands-on, community-engaged learning for students from middle school through graduate training, guided by faculty mentors and rooted in service and trust. The Blue Ridge Poison Control Center provides free, confidential expert advice 24 hours a day and equips families, educators and healthcare providers with tools to prevent poisonings. Mini-Medical School invites community members to step inside medical education, learning directly from our faculty about how doctors think, how research advances care, and how health decisions are made.

Together, these programs reflect a shared belief: when we learn alongside our neighbors, both our learners and our communities grow stronger.
