UVA Radiology Division of Muskuloskeletal Imaging and Intervention

Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention

Using the latest in imaging technology, the Division of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging and Intervention performs a full range of image interpretation and image-guided interventional procedures related to bones, joints and extremity soft tissues. In addition to diagnostic services, the division also specializes in minimally invasive pain management therapies that can often be an effective alternative to surgery.

Imaging Services

Our MSK physicians specialize in bone, joint, spinal and extremity soft tissue imaging. Imaging techniques include radiography (x-ray), CT, Ultrasound, DEXA (bone density) and MRI. For diagnostic purposes, the division also performs biopsies of bone, bone marrow and extremity soft tissue lesions.

Pain Management

We collaborate with numerous departments within the UVA Health System such as Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Rheumatology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Neurosurgery, and others. In addition, MSK physicians provide pain management services to patients receiving care through the UVA Spine Clinic. For diagnosing and treating pain originating in the spine, we administer image-guided nerve blocks, epidurals, and joint injections. Consultative services are also provided for complex cases to determine the imaging strategy best suited for each individual situation.

Education: Fellowship Program

For qualified physicians interested in advanced training, the Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology Imaging and Intervention seeks candidates for fellowship training (non-tenured clinical instructor positions). Candidates must have an MD or equivalent, and have successfully completed a diagnostic radiology residency at an ACGME accredited institution.
