Mission

To facilitate comfort and healing for our patients through creative innovation and teamwork,
with a focus on life-long scholarship, care for ourselves, our community, and the world.

Education

The Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program trains approximately 62 anesthesiology residents annually. ACGME post graduate training is available to six multi-disciplinary Pain Medicine fellows and four fellows in Anesthesia Critical Care Medicine, and two fellows in Regional and Acute Pain Medicine. The department also offers numerous opportunities for advanced training or non-accredited instructorships/fellowships in medical simulation, education research, quality and safety, obstetrics, regional, and neuro anesthesia. Medical students complete a required perioperative clerkship in their third year, including time in the American Society of Anesthesiology endorsed UVA Medical Simulation Center. Elective and research opportunities are available during the fourth year.

Research

The department’s research efforts involve dozens of faculty, residents, and staff in basic science and clinical research projects. Our clinical investigators and PhD researchers maintain active basic science laboratories conducting anesthesiology-related investigations with support from post-docs, fellows, residents, and graduate students. Many of our faculty members are involved in clinical research, supported by a staff of clinical research coordinators and post doctorate research fellows. The Technology in Anesthesia and Critical Care Group focuses attention on biomedical devices and includes faculty from the School of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the School of Medicine. Our Research in Education team is made up of 9 faculty with resident involvement each year and aims to rigorously study and develop novel educational and learning methods in medicine.

Healthcare Plans

UVA is self-insured and these plans are managed by Aetna. UVA offers three health plans, ranging from a “Cadillac” plan to a high deductible plan with HSA account. Of note, the HSA plan, which can accept $7000/year, can be used as a “stealth IRA” upon turning 65, if unused.

Retirement Plans

Depending on your employment status, you have the option to enroll in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), or Medical Center Retirement Program (MCRP). Through these programs, you also get benefits like life insurance, disability coverage, long-term care benefits, and survivor benefits. Supplemental savings plans 403(b) and 457 allow you to invest additional money pre-tax or after-tax.

Tuition Benefit

UVA academic employees are reimburse up to $5,250 annually for work on advanced degrees. Combined with $6000/year in departmental professional development funds, anesthesiology faculty can spend over $11,000/year on advanced degrees with no out-of-pocket expenses. Several faculty are currently working towards or recently completed master’s degrees in business (MBA) as well as public health (MPH).

College Savings

While UVA does not contribute to a college savings plan, the Commonwealth of Virginia has one of the best public university systems in the United States, arguably second only to California, and offers both market-based and pre-paid college savings plans (the second option allows individuals to purchase future tuition at current rates, locking in today’s prices).
