Department of Genome Sciences

The Department of Genome Sciences addresses questions in biology, public health, and medicine by developing and applying state-of-the-art genetic, genomic, and computational approaches to complex human diseases.

Research in Genome Sciences is focused on translational genomics and personalized medicine — moving basic discoveries in genetics and genomics into clinical settings with the goal of improving the delivery of health care and disease prevention.

Our research projects range from gene discovery to pharmacogenomics to mouse models of human disease. Labs in Genome Sciences offer graduate research and training opportunities through the UVA School of Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, and the College of Arts and Sciences graduate programs.

The Future

Genome Sciences is a multi-disciplinary field that focuses on the effective and responsible translation of genetic information and technology for the benefit of population health. A major focus of our work translates genomic discoveries to appropriate population-level assessments, policies, and disease prevention programs.

Graduate students identify Genome Science mentors and conduct research in Genome Science faculty laboratories. This research leads to degrees in disciplines that are typically multidisciplinary.

UVA Seminar Series

The Department of Genome Sciences operates two seminar series during both fall and spring semesters: the weekly Genome Sciences Seminar Series (GS3), and the semi-monthly Genome Sciences Research in Progress (GS-RIP).
