Leadership Programs
Leadership Development Programs
The complex environment of academic medicine poses tremendous leadership challenges for faculty. From leading interdisciplinary teams to pursuing organizational change while navigating demanding organizational and regulatory environments within academic health centers, faculty must develop expertise that is often distinct from their traditional roles and responsibilities. Formal leadership development programs complement faculty members’ clinical, research, and teaching expertise by providing opportunities for faculty to explore who they want to be as leaders and develop the competencies they need to lead effectively in academic medicine.
On this site you’ll find UVA affiliated leadership development programs including the award-wining Leadership in Academic Matters program.
Also included are a few external opportunities. Please note that references or links to programs sponsored by non-School of Medicine entities do not represent endorsement by the University of Virginia School of Medicine. They are shared for informational purposes only.

Leadership in Academic Matters (LAM) is a faculty development opportunity focused on supporting, inspiring, and rewarding those who, in these myriad roles, have demonstrated leadership characteristics and future potential. LAM provides participants with concrete resources, access to expertise and experiential learning opportunities focused on a variety of topics including managing change, building and managing teams, difficult conversations, developing successful networks, and finding life balance in a dynamic and growing career. Weekly half-day sessions are conducted over the course of several months, facilitated by leading experts in academic leadership. Generally, the LAM program is held twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Participation is limited to 30 faculty members per session of which School of Medicine faculty have 15 slots. SOM individuals wishing to participate must be nominated by their department chair. More LAM information is available here.

Many specialty societies offer leadership development programs for their members. Faculty can visit their specialty society’s website and navigate to the appropriate section. Leadership program offerings are often listed under Leadership Development, Faculty Development, Education, Programs, or some other similar heading. A simple Google search combining the specialty society name + “leadership programs” or “leadership development” is another way to find faculty leadership programs offered or supported by the specialty society.
