A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine!

Genomics and multi-omics are transforming our understanding of health and disease, and here at UVA, we’re proud to be at the forefront of that transformation. Our faculty take on some of the most pressing questions in medicine, leveraging advanced experimental and computational approaches to uncover how genomic variation influences biology and contributes to disease.

Training the next generation of genome scientists is central to our mission. Our faculty actively mentor students from the Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and Biology Ph.D. programs, offering support that extends beyond the lab. From developing research ideas to mastering cutting-edge technologies, we guide students every step of the way. Our courses in computational biology, statistical genetics, and genomics equip them with the expertise to drive future breakthroughs in genome sciences.

Collaboration is the cornerstone of our work. Partnering with researchers across UVA and beyond, we foster diverse perspectives that fuel innovation and address complex challenges. We’re always excited to welcome students, scientists, and industry collaborators to join us in pushing the boundaries of genomics and shaping the future of medicine.

Thank you for your interest in our department. I invite you to explore our work and connect with the people in our department.
