The Patel Lab at the University of Virginia is located in the Department of Anesthesiology. Our research focuses on sodium channels and on epilepsy, specifically an epilepsy syndrome known as SCN8A epileptic encephalopathy as well as Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

This pre-print in the bioRxiv highlights the immense potential of base editing techniques as a novel therapeutic approach for not only SCN8A DEE, but other genetic epilepsies as well. Multiple previous undergraduate students are co-authors on this work!
