Welcome from the Chair

Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD
Vernah Scott Moyston Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology
Dear Friends of UVA Ophthalmology,
What a difference a year makes! I have been here now almost a year and a half, and our first newsletter after my arrival was a year ago last fall. At that time, so much about my role was new, and I was just getting to know the institution, the department, my colleagues and co-workers, Charlottesville, the list goes on. What was not new for me were the vision and direction for the department that I wanted to bring here, and I’m so pleased to report that through a tremendous amount of hard work by many dedicated people, we are well on our way.
We have initiated many positive changes in a relatively short time which I am thrilled to share with you here. In addition to the annual excitement of welcoming a new group of bright and eager residents and fellows, we also have five outstanding new faculty who are on the ground and growing our clinical capabilities and capacity in oculoplastics/orbital diseases, pediatric ophthalmology, vitreoretinal diseases, and optometry/contact lens. We have new administrative and clinical space, and we have a new department administrator, Jenny Hamlin, MHA, who has risen through the ranks to this position over 25 years with the department. Our faculty and trainees remain as productive as ever in all our missions, and we are pleased to include herein examples of their successes with you.
I hope you enjoy catching up on all of our progress over the past year. Your friendship and engagement are deeply appreciated. If you are ever in the area, please reach out. We’d love the chance to show you around!
All my best,
Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD
