Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD
Vernah Scott Moyston Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology

I am thrilled to have joined this dynamic department and to greet you in this first of hopefully many newsletters updating you on our latest developments and progress! As I write to you, Fall is rapidly approaching here in Charlottesville. I know many of you have fond memories of the season here with its crisp temperatures, clear blue skies, and vibrant hues of changing foliage. I’m looking forward to experiencing all of it for the first time, and I am confident it will indeed live up to being the “best season of the year” as is commonly claimed. In the same way, I feel excitement and anticipation among our faculty, trainees, and staff for a change in seasons for this department as we enter a new era together. I am so impressed with the many new ways the department finds to thrive, and we are very pleased to share examples of our recent growth and success here in our newsletter.

We give tribute to a truly monumental figure in our department’s history, Steven A. Newman, MD, who played a fundamental role in shaping the education and careers of so many of our residents. You also will learn about how Dr. Newman’s legacy continues to impact trainees through our new, state of the art, surgical training lab. In June, the department dedicated its new LASIK Center, thereby establishing our clinical and educational capabilities in this important area of ophthalmology. We also will update you on the latest progress from our pre-eminent basic research teams within our Center for Advanced Vision Science (CAVS).

As you read these articles, I hope they will create a shared sense of excitement and anticipation for our Department. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us, and thank you for your ongoing support!

All my best,
Albert S. Jun, MD, PhD
