Prior to Renovation: The training lab was limited in space and technology.
At the forefront of surgical education innovation, UVA Ophthalmology dedicated the Steven A. Newman Surgical Skills (SANSS) Lab in Fall 2023. Our advanced facility reflects the department’s commitment to excellence in education, ensuring that our trainees are not only prepared for the current demands of ophthalmology but for future advancements in the field.
The SANSS Lab was designed with the dual purpose of training and transition in mind. Mirroring the layout of a surgical suite, the SANSS Lab offers a familiar environment for residents, minimizing the learning curve and enhancing their readiness for formal surgical settings. This thoughtful design choice underscores our holistic approach to education—blending practicality with cutting-edge technology to create a seamless educational experience.

The Newly Renovated SANSS Lab: State-of-the-art surgical stations and a central display provide a clear and connected learning environment for trainees.
Central to the SANSS Lab’s functionality is its sophisticated audiovisual (AV) system. This technology is pivotal, as it enhances the learning process by allowing procedures performed at microscope stations to be projected onto large screens within the room. The setup ensures that all learners, regardless of their physical location in the room, have a clear view of detailed surgical techniques as demonstrated by instructors. The AV system supports visual learning and facilitates an interactive educational atmosphere where learners can engage with both the content and each other in real-time.
This interactive approach is complemented by the SANSS Lab’s hands-on opportunities. Equipped with the latest instruments and technology, we host wet labs where residents can practice surgical techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors. These sessions are integral to our educational model, providing residents with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled, yet realistic environment.

Hands-On Training in Action: Trainees practice surgical techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors, leveraging advanced equipment and collaborative learning.
The SANSS Lab also serves as a hub for collaborative learning and professional development. Residents are encouraged to share insights and discuss various techniques, fostering a supportive community that enhances both individual and collective learning experiences. This collaborative environment is essential for developing well-rounded surgeons who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to the field of ophthalmology.
While the lab honors Dr. Steven A. Newman’s more than four decades of dedication to surgical education, its focus is aimed at the future. It is a place where the next generation of ophthalmologists is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to lead and innovate. The SANSS Lab not only represents a significant advancement in ophthalmic training but also embodies our dedication to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in ophthalmology education.
As we continue to evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of healthcare, the SANSS Lab becomes a cornerstone of our educational efforts. It is a clear reflection of our commitment to providing residents with the best possible training and preparation, ensuring they are ready to excel in their careers and make meaningful contributions to patient care and education.
