Page Builder “Block” Options

About

With the launch of the new SOM WordPress template in February 2019, an editing tool called Page Builder was added to all SOM websites.

This tool enables web editors to use different design “blocks” to display content on their homepage, as well as internal pages.

Which design blocks you use will be determined by the content you want highlighted on your homepage. Remember, include content that your audience is going to find the most relevant and useful.

Editing the Homepage with Page Builder
  • Go to the homepage and select Edit.
  • Use Page Builder should be set to Yes.
  • The Introductory block is set by default, and cannot be deleted. However, all the other available blocks can be added, deleted, and reordered as you like.
  • To add a block, select Add Row or the “+” , then select a block option. (To help you determine which Page Builder blocks would best fit your content, see the homepage design sampler.)
  • Each block has fields where you will add Headings, Comments, Images/Videos, Event Feeds, etc., depending on the particular block you choose. To learn more about working with these Homepage Page Builder blocks, see below to sign up for a training session or to contact us for one-on-one training.

WYSIWYG or Page Builder

All internal pages will be in one of two formats: 1. WYSIWYG or 2. Page Builder. When creating a new page, you have the choice of creating in either format. However, for new pages, we suggest building out in Page Builder, as this will provide you with more options as indicated below.

WYSIWYG

When content was migrated from the old sites to the new SOM design template, a majority of the pages migrated with no need for any updates or corrections. These pages are in what we call a WYSIWYG format (indicated by No in the Use Page Builder field.). Pages that did not migrate well were rebuilt using Page Builder.

Page Builder

Like the homepage, internal pages can also be built out in Page Builder which enables editors to use different design “blocks” to display content on the page. To help you determine which Page Builder blocks would best fit your content, see the internal page design sampler (PDF).

Editing Internal Pages with Page Builder
  • Go to the homepage and select Edit.
  • Use Page Builder should be set to Yes.
  • To add a block, select Add Row. Select a block option (To help you determine which Page Builder blocks would best fit your content, see the homepage design sampler.)
  • Each block has fields where you will add Headings, Comments, Images/Videos, Event Feeds, etc., depending on the particular block you choose.
Note: You can toggle back and forth between a WYSIWYG view and a Page Builder view by selecting “Yes” or “No” in the “Use Page Builder?” field. You will not lose your content in either view.
