You do not need to be a “Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Program Faculty Member” prior to nominating your student. If you are an assistant professor and a graduate student has not completed a PhD in your lab, you will be assigned a co-mentor who previously trained a CMB student.
CMB TG funding is typically for one year, BUT the program spans three years. This means your student participates in all CMB activities for three years. Each year, one to two highly meritorious students may receive a second year of funding from CMB, but some years we only fund the incoming class of students (their second year in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program).
CMB activities include: the monthly data dinner, the annual CMB retreat, community service and outreach activities, helping co-host seminar speakers, attending two medical center hours/year, and possibly other activities.
Beyond the BIMS core course and area-specific modules, CMB students are required to take a stats course, a grant writing course, and advanced topics in cell biology.
CMB trainees are very strongly encouraged to submit an F31 (or equivalent), which usually takes place around the 2nd/3rd year. This is required to be considered for the additional year of CMB funding.
CMB has a small budget to help defray trainee attendance at conferences.
