Clinical Research Unit
Staff and Facilities
The UVA School of Medicine Clinical Research Unit (CRU) offers licensed staff, who are experienced in research, to UVA study teams. Each protocol requires different nursing interventions, and CRU staff are skilled, flexible, and willing to help with various study needs. Frequently utilized skills include participant assessment, clinical measurements, vascular access (including central line access), IP administration and monitoring; pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics testing; and obtaining ECGs. The CRU carries various medications for use in emergent situations, and has access to UVA’s Rapid Response Team.
Our outpatient unit located in the UVA Collins Wing (formerly Barringer) of the West Complex (101 Hospital Drive), offers dedicated participant parking, seven exam rooms (three with beds), a private office, a dedicated laboratory with freezers, centrifuges, and YSI’s; and a kitchen. UVA’s Exercise Physiology Core Laboratory is located one floor down. Regular business hours at this location are M-F 7am – 3pm, with after-hours capabilities.
The CRU also offers unstaffed research space at UVA’s Fontaine Research Park. This location offers eight rooms: three with exam tables, one with a bed, three interview rooms, and a phlebotomy room. Fontaine also has a dedicated lab, as well as refrigerators/freezers for temporary specimen storage.
Clinical research nursing support can also be arranged for locations within the UVA health system and locations in the greater Charlottesville community.
