Instructional Faculty
Criteria for appointment and promotion; tenure-ineligible
Assistant Professor
A terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) with successful completion of a postgraduate training program if appropriate. For clinicians, ABMS board certification or equivalent or board eligibility; and a major commitment to teaching and clinical service. For non-clinicians, training in an area of study appropriate to the duties detailed in the letter of offer. A detailed position statement or letter of offer with expectations is critical to establish criteria for promotion Time allocation: Majority of time devoted to teaching and educational support activities.
Associate Professor
If serving as a clinical preceptor, a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) with successful completion of a postgraduate training program; ABMS board certification or equivalent (e.g. Royal College) in a clinical discipline.
Academic general faculty members who hold professorial rank at the level of assistant professor are generally eligible for promotion upon completing the sixth year of their appointment. Excellence in meeting expectations of the position statement.
Documented excellence in education:
- Education: Demonstrated record of excellence in biomedical and/or public health education, or biomedical and/or public health education support activities, and the extent to which these activities contribute to the educational capabilities and enhancement at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Scholarship: Publication of original substantive work in peer-reviewed journals is encouraged but not required unless stated in the position statement. Examples of scholarship include, but are not limited to: presentations of original and innovative work at regional and national meetings, creation and presentation of workshops to advance the skills of colleagues. Participation in working groups producing reports, position papers, guidelines, and/or recommendations for future research. Publication of original work, case series, educational materials, reviews, specialty books, textbooks (as author or editor), patents, etc. Participation by invitation to professional conferences, symposia, meetings and/or special lectures is also considered.
Reputation: Regional recognition as an educator and supported by letters from internal and external referees. Exemplary demonstration of the UVa Health System’s ASPIRE values.
Service: Contribution in service to the department, School of Medicine, Health System, University, and/or to professional boards and organizations.
Professor
If serving as a clinical preceptor, ABMS Board certification in primary specialty or discipline required
Academic general faculty members who hold professorial rank at the level of associate professor are generally eligible for promotion upon completing the sixth year of their appointment.
Sustained excellence in education:
- Education: Sustained record of excellence in biomedical and/or public health education, or biomedical and/or public health education support activities, and the extent to which these activities contribute to the educational capabilities and enhancement at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Scholarship: Substantial record of publication in peer-reviewed journals is required. Regional and national impact by dissemination of innovative and original work in education, as evidenced by presentations at national meetings, creation and presentation of workshops to advance the skills of colleagues, participation in working groups producing reports, recommendations, position papers, or guidelines. Published original work, case series, and/or educational materials. Textbook author or editor.
Reputation: Established national and international reputation as an educator recognized by professional societies, editorial boards, governing boards, named lectureships, and supported by letters from internal and external referees. Exemplary demonstration of the UVa Health System’s ASPIRE values.
Service: Contribution in service to the department, School of Medicine, Health System, University, and/or to professional boards and organizations.
