Message from the Chief

Dr. Karen Ballen

Karen Ballen, MD

I appreciate your interest in the Hematology/Oncology Division at the University of Virginia. We are delighted to serve our patients, families, trainees, and community. The Hematology/Oncology Division is devoted to state-of-the-art and compassionate treatment in malignant and non-malignant blood disorders, hemostasis and thrombosis, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapeutics, and solid tumor oncology. We are committed to improving care for tomorrow’s patients and have robust clinical trials and translational research programs. Our 35 hematologists/oncologists provide care at our outpatient facilities at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center or our Community Oncology sites in Fishersville, Culpeper, and Charlottesville (Pantops location). We provide comprehensive care in our inpatient Hematology/Oncology and stem cell units and on the hematology and oncology consultation services.

Division faculty are integral members of the UVA Health System’s Clinical Cancer Center and the NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center directed by Dr. Thomas Loughran, one of 52 such centers in the U.S. The Cancer Center remains in the top 50 US News & World Report rankings, putting us in the top 3% of cancer centers nationally. We are also the only cancer center in Virginia listed on Becker’s Hospital Review 100 Hospitals and Health Systems with great oncology programs for six consecutive years.

Our trainees enjoy a robust clinical and research experience dedicated to producing the next generation of hematologists/oncologists. We are committed to a diverse and safe environment for faculty and trainees.

Our cancer and blood disease multidisciplinary teams apply the latest diagnostic tools and molecular analytics to optimize treatment recommendations. We provide a robust portfolio of clinical trials that bring promising new agents to our patients, including cellular and immune-based therapy.  We offer a Sickle Cell Disease program and an Adult Comprehensive Bleeding Disorders Center to complement our long-standing excellence in managing hemostatic and thrombotic disorders.

Our group is committed to providing the best patient care, education, and research and improving outcomes for cancer patients and blood diseases. Please get in touch with me to learn more about our Division or any of our programs.
